Center phase transition from matter propagators in (scalar) QCD
Novel order parameters for the confinement-deconfinement phase transition of
quenched QCD and fundamentally charged scalar QCD are presented. Similar to the
well-known dual condensate, they are defined via generalized matter propagators
with -valued boundary conditions. The order parameters are easily
accessible with functional methods. Their validity and accessibility is
explicitly demonstrated by numerical studies of the Dyson-Schwinger equations
for the matter propagators. Even in the case of heavy scalar matter, where the
propagator does not show a signature of the phase transition, a discontinuity
due to the transition can be extracted in the order parameters, establishing
also fundamentally charged scalar matter as a probe for color confinement.Comment: accepted versio
Greb1 is required for axial elongation and segmentation in vertebrate embryos
During vertebrate embryonic development, the formation of axial structures is driven by a population of stem-like cells that reside in a region of the tailbud called the chordoneural hinge (CNH). We have compared the CNH transcriptome with those of surrounding tissues and shown that the CNH and tailbud mesoderm are transcriptionally similar, and distinct from the presomitic mesoderm. Amongst CNH-enriched genes are several that are required for axial elongation, including Wnt3a, Cdx2, Brachyury/T and Fgf8 , and androgen/estrogen receptor nuclear signalling components such as Greb1 . We show that the pattern and duration of tailbud Greb1 expression is conserved in mouse, zebrafish, and chicken embryos, and that Greb1 is required for axial elongation and somitogenesis in zebrafish embryos. The axial truncation phenotype of Greb1 morphant embryos is explained by much reduced expression of No tail ( Ntl/Brachyury ) which is required for axial progenitor maintenance. Channels That Die
Given the possibility of communication systems failing catastrophically, we
investigate limits to communicating over channels that fail at random times.
These channels are finite-state semi-Markov channels. We show that
communication with arbitrarily small probability of error is not possible.
Making use of results in finite blocklength channel coding, we determine
sequences of blocklengths that optimize transmission volume communicated at
fixed maximum message error probabilities. We provide a partial ordering of
communication channels. A dynamic programming formulation is used to show the
structural result that channel state feedback does not improve performance
Early childhood respiratory tract infections according to parental subfertility and conception by assisted reproductive technologies.
STUDY QUESTION
Are children conceived by ART or born to subfertile parents more susceptible to upper or lower respiratory tract infections (URTI, LRTI)?
SUMMARY ANSWER
ART-conceived children had a higher frequency of and risk of hospitalization for respiratory infections up to age 3, which was only partly explained by parental subfertility.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
Some studies report increased risks of infections in children conceived by ART. Results for URTIs and LRTIs are inconclusive, and the contribution of underlying parental subfertility remains unclear.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
We included 84 102 singletons of the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) born between 1999 and 2009. Mothers reported time-to-pregnancy at recruitment and child history of, frequency of and hospitalization for, respiratory infections when the child was 6, 18 and 36 months old by questionnaires. Subfertility was defined as having taken 12 or more months to conceive. The Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN) provided information on ART. URTI included throat and ear infections, while LRTI included bronchitis, bronchiolitis, respiratory syncytial virus and pneumonia.
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
We used log-binomial regression to estimate risk ratios (RR) and 95% CI of any respiratory tract infection and hospitalization, and negative-binomial regression to calculate incidence rate ratios (IRR) and 95% CI for number of infections. We compared children conceived by ART, and naturally conceived children of subfertile parents, to children of fertile parents (<12 months to conceive) while adjusting for maternal age, education, BMI and smoking during pregnancy and previous livebirths. We accounted for dependency between children born to the same mother.
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
A total of 7334 (8.7%) singletons were naturally conceived by subfertile parents and 1901 (2.3%) were conceived by ART. Between age 0 and 36 months, 41 609 (49.5%) of children experienced any URTI, 15 542 (18.5%) any LRTI and 4134 (4.9%) were hospitalized due to LRTI. Up to age 3, children conceived by ART had higher frequencies of URTI (adjusted IRR (aIRR) 1.16; 95% CI 1.05-1.28) and hospitalizations due to LRTI (adjusted RR (aRR) 1.25; 95% CI 1.02-1.53), which was not seen for children of subfertile parents. Children conceived by ART were not at higher risks of respiratory infections up to age 18 months; only at age 19-36 months, they had increased risk of any LRTI (aRR 1.16; 95% CI 1.01-1.33), increased frequency of LRTIs (IRR 1.22; 95% CI 1.02-1.47) and a higher risk of hospitalization for LRTI (aRR 1.35; 95% CI 1.01-1.80). They also had an increased frequency of URTIs (aIRR; 1.19; 95% CI 1.07-1.33). Children of subfertile parents only had a higher risk of LRTIs (aRR 1.09; 95% CI 1.01-1.17) at age 19-36 months.
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
Self-reported time-to-pregnancy and respiratory tract infections by parents could lead to misclassification. Both the initial participation rate and loss to follow up in the MoBa limits generalizability to the general Norwegian population.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
ART-conceived children might be more susceptible to respiratory tract infections in early childhood. This appears to be only partly explained by underlying parental subfertility. Exactly what aspects related to the ART procedure might be reflected in these associations need to be further investigated.

A mosaic maternal splice donor mutation in the EHMT1 gene leads to aberrant transcripts and to Kleefstra syndrome in the offspring
The euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 1 (EHMT1) gene was examined in a 3-year-old boy with characteristic clinical features of Kleefstra syndrome. Sequencing of all 27 EHMT1 exons revealed a novel mutation, NM_024757.4:c.2712+1G>A, which affects the splice donor of intron 18. Whereas the index patient is heterozygous for that mutation, his phenotypically normal mother shows tissue-specific mosaicism. Sequencing of EHMT1 RT-PCR products revealed two aberrant transcript variants: in one variant, exon 18 was skipped; in the other, a near-by GT motif was used as splice donor and intronic sequence was inserted between exons 18 and 19. Both transcript variants were found in the patient and his mother. The latter had lower amounts of these transcripts consistent with mosaic status. This is the first description of an EHMT1 point mutation being inherited from a parent with verified mosaicism. The constitutive c.2712+1G>A splice site mutation in EHMT1 is fully pathogenic, and the transcript variants produced do not attenuate the severity of the disease.European Journal of Human Genetics advance online publication, 12 December 2012; doi:10.1038/ejhg.2012.267
On an Information and Control Architecture for Future Electric Energy Systems
This paper presents considerations towards an information and control
architecture for future electric energy systems driven by massive changes
resulting from the societal goals of decarbonization and electrification. This
paper describes the new requirements and challenges of an extended information
and control architecture that need to be addressed for continued reliable
delivery of electricity. It identifies several new actionable information and
control loops, along with their spatial and temporal scales of operation, which
can together meet the needs of future grids and enable deep decarbonization of
the electricity sector. The present architecture of electric power grids
designed in a different era is thereby extensible to allow the incorporation of

c-Jun reprograms Schwann cells of injured nerves to generate a repair cell essential for regeneration.
The radical response of peripheral nerves to injury (Wallerian degeneration) is the cornerstone of nerve repair. We show that activation of the transcription factor c-Jun in Schwann cells is a global regulator of Wallerian degeneration. c-Jun governs major aspects of the injury response, determines the expression of trophic factors, adhesion molecules, the formation of regeneration tracks and myelin clearance and controls the distinctive regenerative potential of peripheral nerves. A key function of c-Jun is the activation of a repair program in Schwann cells and the creation of a cell specialized to support regeneration. We show that absence of c-Jun results in the formation of a dysfunctional repair cell, striking failure of functional recovery, and neuronal death. We conclude that a single glial transcription factor is essential for restoration of damaged nerves, acting to control the transdifferentiation of myelin and Remak Schwann cells to dedicated repair cells in damaged tissue
Associations between endometriosis and adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes: a population-based cohort study.
PURPOSE
To examine the association between endometriosis and adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes (preeclampsia, placenta previa, and preterm birth).
METHODS
A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among 468,778 eligible women who contributed 912,747 singleton livebirths between 1980 and 2015 in Western Australia (WA). We used probabilistically linked perinatal and hospital separation data from the WA data linkage system's Midwives Notification System and Hospital Morbidity Data Collection databases. We used a doubly robust estimator by combining the inverse probability weighting with the outcome regression model to estimate adjusted risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
RESULTS
There were 19,476 singleton livebirths among 8874 women diagnosed with endometriosis. Using a doubly robust estimator, we found pregnancies in women with endometriosis to be associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia with RR of 1.18, 95% CI 1.11-1.26, placenta previa (RR 1.59, 95% CI 1.42-1.79) and preterm birth (RR 1.45, 95% CI 1.37-1.54). The observed association persisted after stratified by the use of Medically Assisted Reproduction, with a slightly elevated risk among pregnancies conceived spontaneously.
CONCLUSIONS
In this large population-based cohort, endometriosis is associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia, placenta previa, and preterm birth, independent of the use of Medically Assisted Reproduction. This may help to enhance future obstetric care among this population
Modern ‘live’ football: moving from the panoptican gaze to the performative, virtual and carnivalesque
Drawing on Redhead's discussion of Baudrillard as a theorist of hyperreality, the paper considers the different ways in which the mediatized ‘live’ football spectacle is often modelled on the ‘live’ however eventually usurps the ‘live’ forms position in the cultural economy, thus beginning to replicate the mediatized ‘live’. The blurring of the ‘live’ and ‘real’ through an accelerated mediatization of football allows the formation of an imagined community mobilized by the working class whilst mediated through the sanitization, selling of ‘events’ and the middle classing of football, through the re-encoding of sporting spaces and strategic decision-making about broadcasting. A culture of pub supporting then allows potential for working-class supporters to remove themselves from the panoptican gazing systems of late modern hyperreal football stadia and into carnivalesque performative spaces, which in many cases are hyperreal and simulated themselves
Completeness of Wilson loop functionals on the moduli space of and -connections
The structure of the moduli spaces \M := \A/\G of (all, not just flat)
and connections on a n-manifold is analysed. For any
topology on the corresponding spaces \A of all connections which satisfies
the weak requirement of compatibility with the affine structure of \A, the
moduli space \M is shown to be non-Hausdorff. It is then shown that the
Wilson loop functionals --i.e., the traces of holonomies of connections around
closed loops-- are complete in the sense that they suffice to separate all
separable points of \M. The methods are general enough to allow the
underlying n-manifold to be topologically non-trivial and for connections to be
defined on non-trivial bundles. The results have implications for canonical
